The terms self-esteem and self-confidence are often used interchangeably when referring to how you feel about yourself. Although they are very similar, they are two different concepts. It is important to understand their roles when looking to improve your overall sense of self.
Self-esteem refers to how you feel about yourself; how much esteem, positive regard or self-love you have. Self-esteem develops from experiences and situations that have shaped how you view yourself today, this is known as your ‘internal self-belief system’.
Self-confidence is how you feel about your abilities and can vary from situation to situation.
For example: One may have a healthy self-esteem, but their confidence is low when they are faced with a particular situation.
When low self-esteem becomes a long-term problem, it can have a harmful effect on our mental health and our lives. Lack of or low self-esteem often begins in childhood. Parents, carers, teachers, siblings and even the media send us messages about ourselves, both positive and negative. These messages don’t necessarily have to be spoken, and as the child does not know any better, they can form the basis for our internal self-belief system. For instance, the message that we aren’t good enough tends to be one that stays with us. Or perhaps as a child you found it hard to live up to other people’s expectations of you.
People often blame or criticise themselves for not being good enough, as if it was character defect. This is simply not true. We were not born with low self-esteem and with a mixture of hypnotherapy, NLP and psychotherapy I will create a treatment plan to improve your self-worth and self-belief system.
We all have times when we lack confidence and don’t feel good about ourselves. Many things can knock our confidence. Bad experiences, disappointments, stress, bereavement, even just being ill.
